The topic for this years competition is:

Is the US currently falling behind in education? If so, what needs to be done?

NLRHS Tournament Results!

I'm very excited to recap our tournament at North Little Rock High School on November 30-December 1, 2012.  We had a great trip with our fantastic driver, Tom.

On Friday night, our three teams competed against some of the best debaters in Arkansas.  Both novice teams, Kirk/Garlock and Stacy/Graham, were undefeated at this tournament.  Our Champ team went head to head with some powerful teams, and they had high speaker points in their final round of the night.  This is quite the accomplishment after debating for 4.5 hours non stop.

On Saturday, our two novice teams advanced to Quarterfinals; they were seeded 2nd and 3rd.  They both advanced to Semifinals; due to the bracket, K/G and S/G met in this round, meaning that they would not debate each other, and the team with the higher speaker points from the night before would advance to finals.  By only two points, K/G advanced to meet a successful team from Fayetteville, against whom the team competed at the Bentonville tournament months before.

While all of the debating was going on, some debaters competed in more traditional forensics events including Extemp and Oratory.  Masen Kuppler advanced to Semifinals in Extemp, and he was a finalist in Oratory!  This is a huge accomplishment, and it was Masen's first attempt at Oratory.

The results at a glance:
Extemporaneous Speaking
Masen Kuppler - Semifinals

Oratory
Masen Kuppler - Finalist

Novice Debate
Taylor Stacy/Brianna Graham - 3rd place
Jenni Kirk/Josh Garlock - 1st place
